Bridge2AI Members Recognized as NIH S-Index Challenge Finalists

October 9, 2025

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced the Phase 1 winners of its $1-million Data Sharing Index (“S-Index”) Challenge, which calls on researchers to design innovative ways to recognize and reward high-quality data sharing.

We are proud to celebrate that several Bridge2AI community members are among the finalists:

From the Salutogenesis Grand Challenge:

  • Bhavesh Patel, Ph.D. (California Medical Innovations Institute) – Phase 1 Winner and Honorable Mention
  • Aaron Y. Lee, M.D. (University of Washington) – Phase 1 Winner and Honorable Mention
  • Cecilia S. Lee, M.D. (University of Washington) – Honorable Mention

From the Bridge Center:

  • Hua Xu, Ph.D. (Yale School of Medicine) – Phase 1 Winner
  • Lucila Ohno-Machado, M.D., Ph.D. (Yale School of Medicine) – Phase 1 Winner

The teams’ projects propose novel, FAIR-aligned S-index metrics that measure the reach, quality, and impact of shared research data. These approaches aim to shift how the research community values data sharing—focusing on reuse, transparency, and broad accessibility.

Phase 1 winners each receive $15,000 and advance to Phase 2, where they will refine their concepts and compete for the grand prize. Honorable mention teams were each awarded $2,500.

Congratulations to our colleagues for this recognition and for driving forward a culture of open, impactful data sharing—a value at the core of Bridge2AI.
