Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)

Every month, ETAI will be sharing a term or concept of the month that is related to ethical issues in biomedical research. The term of the month is part of our module’s milestones relating to engagement and reflection on ethics with the AI-READI team.

Term of February 2026: Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)

A governance and design approach where human experts—such as clinicians or healthcare leaders—are actively involved at critical stages of an AI system’s lifecycle (training, validation, and decision-making). In healthcare, HITL ensures that AI recommendations are reviewed, interpreted, and approved by qualified professionals before influencing patient care or the organization. When done correctly, this approach balances automation with human judgment, ideally reducing risks from errors, bias, or lack of context.
